3How to Prepare Your Research Plan

The research plan is the most weighted document in the document screening (1st selection). It demonstrates your academic preparedness and the relevance of JDS study to your work at home.

Recommended structure

  • 1. BackgroundThe development challenge in your country / sector. Why this issue matters now.
  • 2. Research questionThe specific question your Master's research will answer. One clear sentence.
  • 3. Literature review3–5 key references (academic + policy). Show familiarity with prior work.
  • 4. MethodologyQualitative / quantitative / mixed. Data sources. Time frame.
  • 5. Expected outcomeConcrete deliverables. How findings will improve your work at home.
  • 6. Why JapanWhy a Japanese graduate school is the right place to study this.

Common reasons for rejection

  • Too broadResearch question is generic — "I want to improve public administration"
  • No connection to homeNo mention of how this benefits your country / organisation after return
  • Wrong fitThe chosen graduate school's research areas don't match your topic

5English Proficiency
