Selection Process

From application to departure for Japan.

The JDS selection process follows a common 8-step procedure across all partner countries. The exact schedule and details differ by country — refer to your country page for specifics.

Below is the general timeline that all JDS applicants follow. The exact dates and venues depend on your country's JDS Project Office.

    Step 1 · Mid-November

    Application Deadline

    Submit your application package (paper-based and / or TAO online) by the deadline announced annually by the JDS Project Office in your country. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

    Step 2 · December – Early January

    1st Selection — Document Screening

    Initial document screening conducted by the faculties of each partner Japanese graduate school. Selection is based on academic background, work experience, and the research plan.

  3. 03
    Step 3 · End of November – January

    English & Mathematics Tests

    Mathematics examination is required for applicants to International University of Japan (IUJ) and University of Tsukuba. English proficiency examination is required only for applicants who did not graduate from English-based universities.

    Math exam: approximately 60 minutes. Topics include arithmetic, fractions, equations, inequalities, matrices, basic quadratic / exponential / logarithmic functions, basic integral and differentiation.

    Step 4 · January – February

    2nd Selection — Technical Interview

    Technical interview with the faculties of the graduate schools you applied to. Discussion focuses on your research plan, motivation, and academic preparedness.

  5. 05
    Step 5 · February – March

    3rd Selection — Final Interview

    Comprehensive interview conducted by the JDS Operating Committee Members. Final successful candidates are announced at the end of this stage.

  6. 06
    Step 6 · July – August

    Pre-Departure Orientation

    Held in your home country by the JDS Project Office. Covers logistics, visa procedures, life in Japan, and academic preparation.

  7. 07
    Step 7 · August

    Departure for Japan & Post-arrival Orientation

    Departure for Japan and post-arrival orientation in Tokyo. Briefings on academic life, daily logistics in Japan, and final preparation before the academic year begins.

  8. 08
    Step 8 · September

    Enrollment

    Enrollment at your assigned graduate school for the start of the academic year, marking the official beginning of your JDS Fellow programme in Japan.

2Examinations & Interviews

Required examinations

  • MathematicsRequired for IUJ and University of Tsukuba applicants. 60 minutes, basic math.
  • EnglishRequired only for applicants who did not graduate from English-based universities.
  • Medical check-upConducted in mid-January as part of the selection process.

Interview rounds

  • Technical interviewHeld by university faculties — discussion of research plan and motivation.
  • Final interviewConducted by the JDS Operating Committee Members.
